We strive to bring a youth-led perspective to local issues, both in the form of outreach and policymaking.

Founded in May 2024, YCC is San José District 8's first-ever youth advisory council. As part of Councilmember Domingo Candelas's team, we're involved in all facets of the inner workings of city events – from large-scale 4th of July festivals to weekly music events highlighting local bands. Our purpose? To introduce students to the idea of advocacy and policy, and spread awareness about grassroots politics that affect our everyday lives. Entirely student-run and supported by the District 8 Team, our goal – always – is to create a better neighborhood for everyone. We pitch in where we can! Our events include field research into major issues like homelessness, volunteer work at local events with hundreds of attendees, and weekly canvassing events. We're open to all students in District 8 and welcome all ideas and perspectives!

Our Values

Field Research

YCC, along with the help of District 8's Political Team, is excited to have the opportunity to conduct field research into major issues, including homelessness. Our work interviewing and speaking to people helps bolster connections between the policymaking aspect of our work and the human connection aspect.

Volunteer Work

YCC members are mandated to volunteer at District 8-sponsored events, including weekly Music in the Square (MIS) events and other community-building activities. In order to give back to the community, we prioritize helping out as much as we can – and we've proven to be of great help in ensuring that events run smoothly.

Policymaking

Our goal as a youth advisory council is to communicate local perspectives and opinions to the Councilmember, then come together and form unique and holistic solutions to issues in our community. Our research and experience working with our neighbors contribute greatly to our brainstorming process, and we're happy to have excellent connections with our District 8 Team.
